Youth Worker Methods Training
These workshops were developed by the Center for Youth Program Quality, based on decades of experience working with youth and extensive research into best practices in youth programs. All Methods workshops are active, provide time for interaction and time for reflection, connect abstract key points to concrete real practices, and come with a printed resource guide on the topic which each participant will take back with them.

Morning Session:
Planning and Reflection
9:00-11:00 am
Why do we sometimes make the same mistakes repeatedly? In many cases, we are moving so fast that we don’t take time to think about our past work or to plan for better work in the future. This session challenges the practice of pushing youth to develop this bad habit. In this workshop, participants will explore the ways that they are currently supporting youth in making plans and reflecting on experiences. They will play and practice with a variety of strategies for both planning and reflecting. Participants will learn about the roles that these elements play in an experiential learning cycle. 2 STARS/MERIT credits in Child Guidance, Development & Learning.
LUNCH 11:00-Noon
Afternoon Session:
Reframing Conflict
Noon-2:00 pm
One of the most effective ways to step out of a negative rut is to consider the issue from a different angle. People who work with youth – or others of any age, for that matter – are bound to experience conflict. Many of us try to avoid it whenever possible. This session promotes a healthier practice. In this workshop, participants will learn a step-by-step method of conflict resolution. They will examine their own outlook towards conflict and the roles they play in challenging situations. Participants will come away with new insights into the way that reframing conflict can turn stressful situations into opportunities for growth. 2 STARS/MERIT credits in Child Guidance.
