SOAR Event My Dream School Competition by Ilana Kalmbach — event date Jan 01, 2012 12:00 AM
The League of Education Voters and Seattle's Child want to hear from students about their dream schools. Kids and youth in K-12 can submit any creative entry about what their perfect school would have, whether it's a rap about Batman being principal or a sculpture showing how there would be enough computers for every student. The contest goes until January 31 at midnight. Winners will win a prize and a mention on LEV's blog and in Seattle's Child.

SOAR Event Project Splash: Learn new curriculum and tools for encouraging girls in STEM by Andrew Nelson — event date Jan 23, 2012 08:00 AM
We are providing this opportunity as part of a nationwide NSF grant. The training uses an underwater LEGO robotics curriculum (called WaterBotics) where you can build underwater ROVs and learn basic science and engineering concepts. We are training educators on this curriculum, as well as on tips and tools for running effective STEM programs for girls. Throughout the workshop they also learn how to implement a summer camp program. We also check-out materials kits to the participants ($3500 value) and provide ongoing technical support. All of this is at no-cost since it is covered under the grant. To be eligible, educators have to apply and sign a contract stating they will run a summer program using the curriculum and administer our evaluation surveys.

State of Washington. Over 1000 people are expected to attend. Event will begin at 8:30a.m in the Office Building 2, and various forums will be held in different locations through out day. During the event attendees will be addressed by a variety of respected State Officials including State Representatives, Senators and the Governor. As a participant will able to engage in policy sessions, and or speak to legislators about pending legislation that will affect our communities: Revenue Based Solutions, Voting Rights, Education, Health care, Farm Worker rights, Immigration, Juvenile Justice and others.

The focus of the work session is to give an overview of Expanded Learning Opportunities, the Supporting Student Success-S3 Initiative and the development of a new state plan for afterschool and youth development. In the first new plan since 2003, we will emphasize programs that intentionally support academic outcomes for youth of color, from low-income families, and English Language Learners. The plan will also identify strategies for all programs serving children and youth in the hours they are not in school.

Running human services programs at a time of persistent recession is challenging at best. This workshop will cover such approaches as assessing current program efforts, focusing on effectiveness, focusing on client 'readiness to benefit' from services, and opportunities for program integration and restructuring. The two key assumptions are: (1) the recession will continue for the foreseeable future; and (2) there are many opportunities for innovation and creativity as human services organizations adjust to the new economic reality.
