Resume Help for Refugee Students
Up to Volunteer Opportunities
Dear Colleagues-
In support of a Refugee Impact Grant funded program for job readiness at the SBOC, I am currently recruiting 10 volunteers to work with students on developing their first resumes. If you, or your colleagues are interested in contributing four hours over two days during the following times, please contact me. A brief volunteer opportunity description follows. Thank you for your advocacy for refugee students.- Rachael HaileSelasse
Job Shadow Resume Workshop
April 12 and 14 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm.
The resume workshop is part of a 4 week job shadow program that the SBOC offers to introduce 10 job-seeking students to the basics of employment practices. From past experience with this program, we are trying to recruit one volunteer resume tutor/ mentor per student. Learning computer operations and English language practices for building basic resumes is quite a learning curve for newly arrived students. Yet, these are skills they have to demonstrate in order to start earning a living.
During these two sessions, mentors can work one on one with students on developing their high-school format resume. The workshops will be taught by Mohamed Roble with Linda Todd or me. We’ll have handouts for each mentor/ student team to follow. There is no preparation required to volunteer on these two days.
I am looking for volunteers who demonstrate skills in: Microsoft Word, resume and cover letter writing, and most importantly, in working with diverse students who speak limited English.
This can be a great opportunity for volunteers who are interested in teaching ELL populations or those who want to help out in their community and school without making a lengthy time commitment.
